Biography

Dr. Melissa Talhelm is a Professor of English and the Coordinator of the Secondary English Education Program. A former high school English teacher, she specializes in reading and writing pedagogy but also teaches composition, young adult literature, and a course called Lyrics as Literature, which grew out of Melissa's past life as a singer-songwriter. Her research interests include ecocriticism--and a project called The Literary Garden at West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield, MI--the teacher-as-artist model, songwriting, and English Language Arts pedagogy. Melissa was awarded the SCSU Board of Regents Teaching Award in the Spring of 2017 and the J. Philip Smith Outstanding Teaching Award in the Spring of 2014. A "Triple Hoo" from the University of Virginia, Melissa earned her B.A. (English), M.A.T. and Ph.D. in Charlottesville, VA. Go Hoos!
